Genetic make-up determines whether we die from anthrax exposure
By Daily Mail Reporter Last updated at 3:15 PM on 17th February 2012 Created 5:25 PM on 6th February 2012 Bio-hazard: Scientists found three out of 234 people were virtually insensitive to the anthrax toxin. They said this could have implications for other pathogens like HIV Some people have a natural genetic resistance to anthrax, according to scientists. Research into anthrax found susceptibility to the deadly disease caused by the bacterium Bacillus anthracis varied from person to person – revealing that susceptibility to the toxin is a heritable genetic trait Continue reading

North Carolina-based genetic resources fuel big scientific progress
Public release date: 16-Feb-2012 [ | E-mail | Share ] Contact: Ellen de Graffenreid edegraff@med.unc.edu 919-962-3405 University of North Carolina School of Medicine A series of 15 scientific papers published this week in the journals of the Genetics Society of America (Genetics and G3: Genes|Genomes|Genetics) put North Carolina at the epicenter of a scientific resource called the Collaborative Cross ? a “library” of genetic diversity that scientists believe can help fast-track important discoveries about genetics and disease into new discoveries, tests, and treatments that impact human health. Researchers have long been frustrated by promising lab results that hit obstacles on the road to human application. Sometimes this is because research in other living organisms is very limited in terms of what conclusions scientists can safely extrapolate to the human population as a whole. Continue reading

Morristown fertility clinic helps teen with genetic defect unravel mysteries of her own DNA
MORRISTOWN — From across the globe each year, thousands of people who have trouble having a healthy baby travel to a nondescript office building in Morristown — the home of Reproductive Medicine Associates of New Jersey, headquarters for the largest medical practice of its kind in the nation. Julia Horowitz, a 16-year-old sophomore at Watchung Hills Regional High School, found her way there, too, but she was driven by a different goal. The Warren Township teen, like a growing number of people, sought help to unlock her genetic code — something that could affect decisions she makes, including having a baby. Continue reading

Stanford scientists bypass stem cells to create nervous system cells
Bypassing stem cells, mouse skin cells have been converted directly into cells that become the three main parts of the animal's nervous system, according to new research at the Stanford University School of Medicine. The startling success of this method seems to refute the idea that “pluripotency” — the ability of stem cells to become nearly any cell in the body — is necessary for a cell to transform from one cell type to another. It raises the possibility that embryonic stem cell research, as well as a related technique called “induced pluripotency,” could be supplanted by a more direct way of generating cells for therapy or research Continue reading
